5 things that happen when your cousin starts his first MLB game

My cousin, Ross Stripling, made his first professional start for the LA Dodgers tonight after spending the last two years recovering from Tommy John surgery. And because of that, this Friday looks a little different than most.

  1. The family group text blows up

Like nonstop. Let’s say the moment Ross got the nod to fly out to LA and join the team it started. However, I’m not complaining. We are Ross’ #1 fans!!

  1. Dad can’t even eat dinner

So my dad came to go to dinner with me tonight in Austin. Too bad he hasn’t touched his meal. “I’m too nervous” he says. Conversation only revolves around Ross: what pitch will Ross throw next, what is Ross thinking, will Ross pick this guy off? What a lovely dinner. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

  1. The morning of you wake up and feel like it is your own gameday

Have I said I’m nervous, anxious, excited? This is huge! I feel like I just got the call to take the mound. HA. That would be real bad. If I am feeling like this, I can’t imagine what he is thinking but I hope Ross is confident and calm, assured that he is ready for this.

  1. Serious depression that you didn’t hop on a flight: Um, why am I not in San Francisco?

So this would be a lot more #hyped if I were there. Instead I am sitting in Austin, Texas (approx. 1500 miles from San Fran) watching Ross throw off of my phone. But I still can’t contain the excitement. Apologies to the people I am eating dinner with and others sitting anywhere close to me.

  1. Complete confidence that the Dodgers will win!! (and your cousin throws a no hitter through 7 1/3 innings… nbd)

If there is one thing I am sure of it is Ross’ ability to win. I have watched him in high school, college at A&M (ha hook em), and now I get to watch as he starts his career as a professional. Ross is a winner, a fierce competitor, that refuses to lose and because of that my money is on Ross tonight.

Let’s go Dodgers!!!
