Why The Boston Marathon Is So Great

The Boston Marathon, the good old annual run that people from all around the world prep for all year long. Although it is the world’s oldest annual marathon, to many the Boston Marathon is a boring event that doesn’t mean much to them. Some might even wonder why it gets the attention it does. In reality, there is so much more to the Boston Marathon than just the running itself. I’m going to take you through a series of reasons why the Boston Marathon is great and deserves respect from not only sports fans but also everyone.

Most Widely Viewed Sporting Event

Boston is home to many professional teams such as the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and the Boston Red Sox. These teams have had much success in their time being and you would assume that the Boston people’s attendance at these games would surpass the marathon by a landslide. Believe it or not, the Boston Marathon is New England’s most widely viewed sporting event. Approximately 500,000 people show up to cheer the runners on and provide them with free water and snacks.

Scream Tunnel

Witnessing this great event is one thing but being a part of it and running through the entire course is something you’ll remember forever. One of the famous parts of the trail in the Boston Marathon is the Scream Tunnel. This tunnel is in fact not a real tunnel. It is simply a quarter mile of screaming students from Wellesley College, a private, women’s, Liberal Arts College. For the entire quarter mile, students and fans scream and offer kisses to the runners. It is told that the tunnel is so loud the runners can hear it a mile away. Many runners love this tradition that has been happening since 1897.

Boston Red Sox

Boston Red Sox Victory ParadeIn the great community of Boston, they like to stick together and cheer each other on whether it’s a baseball game or a running marathon. Well in this instance, it’s both. Every year since 1903, the Boston Red Sox play at home and begin their game at 11:05 AM. After the game ends, they all rush out to Kenmore Square, which is located at the last mile and they cheer on the runners.

These are just a few reasons why the Boston Marathon is a great tradition that everyone should try to be a part of. There is a list of many more reasons but I’ll just keep it to these three great ones. If you find yourself in the mood to run a marathon, get some practice in and prep for one the largest ones, which is the Boston Marathon and remember all these great traditions that make it one of the greatest events in sports history.
