The UT Women’s Tennis Team, ranked No. 24, return today for a showdown in Waco against the No. 15 team, the Baylor Bears. This comes after a ten day hiatus after their victories against the TCU Horned Frogs (4-0), the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-0) and the Iowa State Cardinals (4-0) in three consecutive weeks. The match against Iowa state ended on April 2. The match against Baylor represents the last big stretch of the final Big 12 match ups this season.
Four of the women on the squad our nationally ranked: newcomer from Italy Bianca Turati is ranked No. 36 in singles; newcomer Petra Granic from Croatia is No. 74; and senior Neda Koprcina also from Croatia is ranked as No. 76. In doubles, Petra Granic and junior Dani Wagland from Australia are ranked as No. 46; and Granic and Turati are ranked as No. 65. As you can tell, there’s a lot of talent on this team.
Baylor’s Lady Bears have yet to break their home court record, having won all ten games at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco this season. They were also victorious in their past six matches, including the then-ranked No. 20 Texas A&M’s Aggies. Like our Longhorns, Baylor has also beaten Iowa State as well as West Virginia. The Lady Bears are also proud to include the No. 5 nationally ranked singles player, senior Blair Shankle, who is the ninth player in Baylor history to bring home a 100th career win for the squad. Senior Rhiann Newborn is also nationally ranked as No. 119, and Shankle with sophomore Elizabeth Profit are nationally ranked in doubles at No. 44, two spots above Longhorns Granic and Wagland.
Needless to say, this match up is challenging both teams to bring it their A-game. Both teams have been on a winning streak, and a victory will have to come down to the wire. See the links below for live stat updates and a live video feed. #HookEmHorns
